US Army 77th Evacuation Hospital Unit

Officially activated on May 10, 1942, and composed of 47 doctors and 52 nurses recruited largely from the KU School of Medicine, the US Army 77th Evacuation Hospital Unit provides emergency medical treatment to tens of thousands of Allied soldiers, civilians, and prisoners of war near the frontlines over the course of a three year tour of duty. The unit served in the Allied invasion of North Africa, landed at Normandy only a month after D-Day, and served in the Battle of the Bulge.
