Digital History

Colby College, in Waterville, Maine, was the first college in New England to admit women on an equal basis with male students. The women faced many challenges as they explored this new path of education, but they were courageous and determined to make a place for women in the collegiate world. This feeling inspired the first women at Colby College to form Sigma Kappa on the basis of scholarship, friendship, mutual interests and ideals during the 1873-74 school year. For over 150 years, Sigma Kappa has preserved a wealth of historical materials, including member photographs, letters, meeting notes, scrapbooks, jewelry, and more. Previously, these artifacts have lived at the National Headquarters or with individual chapters, but now these artifacts are also being preserved digitally and made available on this dynamic site in order to share the Sorority’s history with current and future generations.
