World War I at KU

From collection Xi Chapter Timeline

Students at KU get involved with the war effort in 1914, collecting donations of supplies such as bandages and chloroform. In 1917, women at KU founded a campus chapter of the American Red Cross to learn first aid skills and prepare for nursing work. After the United States joined the war effort, students at KU enlisted in the Kansas National Guard or took part in military training on campus, began volunteer work as nurses on military bases at home and military hospitals in Europe, made thousands of bandages and compresses, and raised money for the American Red Cross.
